Diamond Tipped Glass Drill Bit
We all know that glass is hard and brittle and very easy to break unless you have tempered glass. There is a type of glass that will just shatter if you try to do anything like cutting a hole in it. So be careful in trying any of these things. Use gloves, eye protectors or better still a face mask, to keep yourself safe. To cut a hole in glass you will need the hardest type of glass drill bit, which is a diamond tipped glass drill bit.
Hole in a Bottle
It will be extra difficult if you are trying to drill a hole in something that is not completely flat. So panes of glass will be easier to deal with than for instance a bottle. When you are doing the drilling make sure that the glass is well supported. You have to drill very slowly especially when you start the drilling. The faster the drill speed the hotter the drill bit will get and the more likely it is to break the glass or wear out the diamond drill bit for glass.

The speed of the drill should be about 2500 rpm when you begin, or slower so that you don’t chip or crack the substrate. For the smaller holes a rounded end or a core bit that is the required size will be best. You can gradually increase speed a little after you have got started. The larger the glass drill bit is the slower you should be drilling.keep an eye on the colour of the drill bit. You will see it becoming discoloured if it is getting too hot.
Keep it Cool
Reduce the heat caused by the friction by cooling the area you are drilling. One good way to do this is to get some plasticine or something similar to build a little wall around the drilling point. Fill it with water . Or you could put the item if it is small enough to fit, in a tray that can be filled with water. Watch Out ! Water and electric do not mix well. So extra precautions may have to be taken to ensure you don’t electrocute yourself.

Safety First
I may be a good idea if it is possible to get a tray filled with water and lie the object so that it is immersed in the water. Take that when you break through to the other side that you don’t drill through the tray also. Of course you can’t do that if the object is fixed in a vertical position. In that case you might get a helper to have a small plastic bottle of water to drip, dribble or spray carefully on the tip of the glass tile drill bit as it is drilling.
What I have found to be the best way to get a hole started is to put some tape on the class so that the drill doesn’t skate around before taking hold. Failing that then you could get a plywood template to drill though that is thick enough to keep the glass cutting drill bit in place. The same rules apply when drilling into tile or stone. One more thing – A hammer dill is not a good idea when working with glass.
